Amalia Eugenia Faulhaber: Her family torn apart and impoverished by war, Amalia struggles to find her way in a changing world. This dazzling socialite of the old world contends with deeply contradictory notions and personal crises to become a woman who would be extraordinary in any age.
Eberhard von Waldburg: Amalia's fiancé, a Prussian baron studying violin at University of Vienna who is destined to be an officer in the German army. His gentle, musical side is in constant opposition to the warrior his abusive father raised him to be.
Andrzej Zaleski: An aristocratic Polish medical student at the University of Vienna, the best medical school in the world in 1913. At the age of ten, he suffered a tragedy that has shaped his life, causing him to keep his natural tenderness and tendency to devotion hidden. Fiercely nationalistic, outwardly flirtatious, he knows that Amalia has seen behind his mask.
Rudolf von Shoenenburg: An Austrian baron whose charity connections ally him with Amalia's uncle. Rudolph also commands Wolf, Amalia's brother in the Austrian army. Is prone to melancholy, a family trait, which he endeavors to hide, as members of his family have been inclined to violence. Though his own demeanor is gentle, he is determined not to fall in love, especially not with Amalia.
